How Your Skin Changes as You Get Older

Wrinkled WomanAs we age, our skin becomes more fragile and the things that we once took for granted need a little more care. The way we have treated our skin, the pollutants to which we’ve exposed our skin when younger and the lifestyle we lead all contribute to the condition of our skin as we age.

Young, healthy and vibrant skin has a plump, firm look. The skin tone is even and there are no wrinkles in sight. Instead it is smooth and has a rosy glow. Over time, however this begins to change. Depending on genetics, environment (such as a heavily polluted area) and lifestyle (such as smoking or excessive sun exposure), oftentimes results in the skin showing signs of aging as early as the mid-20’s. Others begin to notice some ‘crow’s feet’ developing around the eyes in their 30’s with more pronounced fine lines and wrinkles appearing in the following years.

Too much sun exposure in youth will lead to dry skin, which has a leathery, weathered appearance. It can also lead to the development of sun spots, which are darkened patches of overexposed skin. These can be small or large, and while they are concerning whenever they appear anywhere on our body, the sun spots that occur on the face make the facial skin appear much older than its true age. As we age, our skin naturally thins, making it more likely to burn when exposed to the sun, which makes it even easier to develop these unsightly sun spots over time.

Skin also loses its firmness and elasticity over time, which leads to lines and saggy skin around the eyes, mouth, forehead and neck. The pulling and tugging on skin when applying or removing make-up can make this worse. These are the signs of aging that most adults are concerned with and in turn search for products specifically designed to combat these issues.

Sometimes skin will become sensitive to products that were once used without any problems, so you may need to look for different products that don’t cause sensitivity.

It’s not all doom and gloom, however. If you take care of your skin from a young age, eat right and get plenty of sleep, water and exercise as you protect against sun exposure, the signs of aging should be minimal. If you haven’t been as careful as needed, there are plenty of excellent anti-aging products on the market for every skin type. The right products can help reduce the signs of aging and help restore a healthy, youthful glow to your skin, no matter what your age.
